OSU EERI Seismic Design Team - 2011 National Champs!

Congratulations to our OSU team of Nick Stroud, Matt Schaefer, Taharka Vue and Morgan Kruse, led by Michael Bode, traveled to San Diego and came home with first place in the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute's annual Seismic Design Competition. Their unique and aesthetic building design and presentation won the contest among 28 teams from around the US and international entries as well. The stiff and strong OSU building survived the earthquake loadings that others did not, and the team's predictions of deflection and acceleration were very close to the actual responses. See VIDEO and ranked results here.

OSU Beam Team - 2011 National Champs!

Congratulations to our OSU Beam Team who placed FIRST at nationals -- our third national championship (2004, 2009 and 2011) in the Big Beam Contest! The International PCI Engineering Student Design Competition, also known as the Big Beam Contest, entails the design, fabrication and testing of precast, prestressed concrete beams by student teams under the guidance of local PCI producer members. Prizes are awarded for most efficient design, highest load capacity, and best report, among multiple categories. First place winners of the zone competitions move up to the international competition to be judged against one another to determine the overall champion. See the top seven winning team results here. Quoting team advisor Dr. Keith Kaufman, (Chief Engineer, Knife River Corporation Northwest), “I believe we shall call this a DYNASTY. It is a great day to be a BEAVER!” Watch the winning beam break here.
